Anbe Sivam - One of My All Time Favorites

Once in a while, you see a movie that changes your perspectives forever. You're never the same after that experience. I could name a very few movies like that: American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, Memento, Requiem for a Dream, The Pursuit of Happyness, The Matrix.

But I've seen one movie long before the ones mentioned above that had one of the best eye-opener moments: Anbe Sivam (2003). Its English title can be Love Is God. No, it's *not* a romantic story; it's just a story about love in general and how everything else, including religion and ideologies (should I say 'especially' religion?), becomes irrelevant when it comes to humanity.

Needless to say, Kamal Hasan was amazing in the lead role as Nalla Sivam. I cannot think of a better actor than him who could've done this role. Madhavan, the supporting actor in this movie, compliments Kamal very well.

The movie has some very good and intellectual comedy scenes, like the 'to to to to to two' scene (Didn't get it? I intentionally obscured it so that I don't spoil it for you. Watch the movie, seriously!). The only things that I found unnecessary were the improbable fight scene which you see in most of the Indian movies, the little love story which had a good message but it could've been made a bit shorter and little different, and some coincidences. But that's O.K; you will forgive these after watching the movie and you will say, "I didn't find that distracting at all."

One thing that amazed me was when Kamal Hasan, in one of the scenes, talks about Tsunami, and how big the waves are. Madhavan doesn't believe it and thinks Kamal is a liar who loves to brag like he knows about most of the things. Considering the movie came out in 2003, before Tsunami, I found it very surprising when I watched it yesterday.

The music is subtle and superb. I loved the theme song by the same name as the movie - Anbe Sivam - which is sung by Kamal Hasan himself. Like I told you, this gem of a movie is about love and humanity and it manages to convey this message so admirably that I'm running out of adjectives to describe it. A must watch!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars with a score of 9/10. I would've given it a 10 if it was not for the fight scene and some factual errors.
