The Untouchables: Movie Review

I've heard about this movie, The Untouchables. I was under the impression that it's some cheap-ass animation or comic movie such as The Incredibles or something like that. The name was, you know, a little cheap and boring. So, I didn't really think I would watch this movie. But two weeks ago, on a Saturday, I was utterly bored and I was thinking of watching some good movie. So I was trying one by one, including this.

The movie started with an amazing soundtrack when rolling its opening credits. Very soon, the credits showed that it's "A Brian De Palma Film." Yes, the director of Scarface. That's it. I was so excited and waiting for the credits to show the cast. Kevin Costner, Andy Garcia, Charles Martin Smith. Man o Man, I was loving it. Then came the real surprise: "Robert De Niro as Al Capone." Woooohoooo...

Then, Sean Connerey as Malone. Were they kidding me? No, they weren't. I was all set to not move till I finish the movie. The movie's premise was simple. It was Prohibition era in the United States when selling alcohol was illegal and ganglords, like Al Capone, were controlling the selling of illegal alcohol.

The opening scene was superb. Starts with Robert De Niro talking about Prohibition and how he's just responding to the will of the people. He says, "People are gonna drink. You know that, I know that, we all know that." And, when talking about using violence, he responds, "You can get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word."

He absolutely steals the show every time he comes on screen. He doesn't have much on-screen time as our protagonist cop, Kevin Costner, who did a wonderful job as the lead of the movie. As always, the cop gets busted first but then takes oath to put Capone, Robert De Niro, in prison. He teams up with Charles Martin Smith, Andy Garcia, and Sean Connerey to do the job.

After some initial failures, he slowly starts to improve on his operation and the rest of the story is how he succeeds, or fails, in his operation. Sean Connerey, who won an Oscar for this role, was supposed to be very good. But, I never find his acting great. It's just my problem. I don't know why. May be because I saw him first in some crazy Bond movies and in one of the Indiana Jones movies where he is sort of a clown. At least, that's what I thought. My favorite in this movie is Robert De Niro as Al Capone.

The next best acting came from Kevin Costner. He looks like the perfect guy for "The Righteous Man on the Planet" role. He has "hero" written all over his face. What makes this movie better than Goodfellas, for me, is the way the story moves at a breaktaking pace in typical Hollywood style. Thoroughly entertaining. And, Ennio Morricone's music is, as always, amazing. His music sets the tone of the movie absolutely perfectly. You'll take the movie much more seriously because of the music that goes on in the background.

To me, this is the best gangster movie after The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II. Not Goodfellas, not Casino, not American Gangster. May be I shouldn't compare, but what the hell, I'll do anyway.

Overall rating: 8/10. A must watch for anyone who is looking for a thrilling movie experience.

End was confusing...Judge was having letter in his hand containing name of all the officer bribed, so he should know name of all the officer bribed...But in the last when advocate asks "The Untouchable" "What did u say to judge", he said "Your name is also there in that list."

Aftab,

I agree. The ending was over the top and cartoonish. That's the only reason I didn't give this movie a 5 star rating.
