Game Over

When I decide to watch a movie, I do not care about the actor or the actress so much. What I care about is the director. After watching Se7en and Fight Club, I had very high hopes on David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It was good but boring. That was some 3 months ago.

Yesterday, I watched his other movie -- The Game. It's of thriller and mystery genres -- my favorite combination. So, I was very excited at the beginning but only to get terribly disappointed at the end. In short: The Game sucks.

The premise is simple but I'll just quote Wikipedia 'cause I'm so lazy to think and write right now:

It tells the story of an investment banker who is given a mysterious gift: participation in a game that integrates in strange ways with his life. As the lines between the banker's real life and the game become more uncertain, there are hints of a large conspiracy.

The mystery of this movie is to find out what that conspiracy is. The story is gripping for a while but soon you'll figure out that it's a wild goose chase and there's no way the movie can have a logical explanation. There can only be two possible explanations to the mystery: 1) Something supernatural. 2) The stupid ending which this movie has.

If the ending was something supernatural, I would have blacklisted David Fincher from my list and I would never watch his movies again. Thankfully, he was not *that* stupid. Still, it's a cop-out ending. The kind of ending you'll write when you start writing a story without thinking of the ending before putting your pen down.

Verdict: 1 out of 5 stars with a score of 2/10.

Only because Michael Douglas acted extremely well that I've given all the points for the single star, otherwise this movie is just 1/10. Don't waste your time watching this movie, watch his Fight Club instead. The suspense is far better and the story is very entertaining. And if you're a guy, Fight Club will be an important movie in your life.

Hmmmm ... I think I disagree about the ending. I think the ending is what makes the movie very exciting and watchable. You say you would have hated it had it been a supernatural thriller and I am sure the movie would have sucked had the plot continued the way it did. I, for one, enjoyed the movie because of the way it ended. Just my 2 cents :-)

Ajeya,

**** Spoilers ****The reason why I didn't like the ending was because it was all a setup by his brother and friends. Now that is a BIG and elaborate setup too far away from anything close to belief.

The reasons why I'm unable to digest the ending are:

1) He gets stuck inside a car that's drowning. What if he didn't get the idea to use the key? If I was his brother, I wouldn't take this chance. If my brother did this to me and if I survive, I will kick his ass.

2) He's drugged and thrown out somewhere in Mexico?

3) He jumps off and nothing happens?

Again, I have no problem with all of the above. But his brother setting it up just that he can be normal and enjoy his life like everyone else? That's where it turned me off. A better ending: he shoots his brother and jumps off from the roof top and they both die for playing dirty games. But even this ending sucks! I will not make this movie if I had the money, script, and talent to direct a movie.

The suspension of disbelief required for this movie was a little out of my threshold limit.

That's just my opinion. I also understand that you've to have the right mindset and watch the movie to enjoy it thoroughly. I did when I was watching Burn After Reading and some people didn't like it. But I couldn't get around this.
